Princess Mandalika (The Story of Bau Nyale)

Putri Mandalika: Bravery in Self-Sacrifice

Folklore from West Nusa Tenggara

In ancient times in Lombok, there lived a stunning princess named Mandalika. Her captivating beauty enchanted many princes, who journeyed from distant lands to seek her hand in marriage. Yet, Princess Mandalika, kind-hearted and compassionate, was unwilling to hurt the feelings of the suitors by rejecting them. When the king organized an archery competition at Seger Beach, Kuta, all the princes vied for Princess Mandalika's affection.

Each prince showcased his archery prowess, hoping to win her heart, yet none prevailed. As tensions escalated, conflicts arose.

Not willing to witness chaos and strife, Princess Mandalika realized a solution. With courage, she spoke, "You all desire to be a part of my life, but I cannot be a wife to everyone. I wish to be beneficial to all, akin to Nyale. I shall become something that brings joy to everyone."

Without further ado, Princess Mandalika leaped into the boundless ocean, vanishing into the waves. Frantic searches ensued, but the turbulent waters hindered their efforts.

In time, they discovered numerous sea worms on the shore. The king understood that his daughter had transformed into Nyale, a delectable sea worm, immortalized in memory of the sacrificial act.

To this day, the people of Lombok celebrate Bau Nyale to capture Nyale. However, Nyale can only be found once a year, in February or March.

This tradition commemorates the courage of Princess Mandalika, who sacrificed herself for the greater good and tranquility. She became Nyale, a symbol of unity and benevolence for all.

Moral Message: Sacrifice for Collective Security
The moral of Princess Mandalika's tale revolves around sacrifice for collective security. Her self-sacrifice into the sea prevented the princes from battling and disrupting peace. This extraordinary act underscores the significance of sacrifice and bravery in preserving harmony and unity. Furthermore, the story teaches that sometimes one person's sacrifice can benefit many, fostering stronger societal bonds through the spirit of selflessness.
